Cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying human neuronal and circuit evolution
Baptiste Libé-Philippot is a Group Leader at the IBDM and CNRS Chargé de recherche since October 2024. He explores the evolution of the development and the properties of human neurons and circuits. In a first part of the seminar, he will describe his previous work (VIB – KULeuven, Belgium) during which he explored the evolutionary divergence of human cortical neurons. He discovered a novel hominid-specific receptor, LRRC37B, that sustains the evolutionary divergence of the excitability of human cortical neurons (Libé-Philippot et al., Cell, 2023). Moreover, he demonstrated in human neurons the necessary role of human-specific genes SRGAP2B/C in the protracted synaptic development of human cortical neurons (Libé-Philippot et al., Neuron, 2024). Both works show that human-specific genes can be modifiers of neurodevelopmental disorder molecular pathways, including autism spectrum, intellectual deficiency and epilepsy. He will introduce in a second part his current projects (ERC StG hCerebEvol) on the evolution of human cerebellar neurons with the aim to identify human species-specific cellular and developmental features and their underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms.
