Title: Embodied motility control in ‘simple’ organisms
Abstract: Microorganisms have evolved diverse ways of interacting and navigating their environments. Many ingenious mechanisms of self-generated locomotion strategies exist, ranging from fully aquatic to surface-based to migration through complex media. In most cases, morphology plays a crucial role, influencing how an organism changes its shape, or the form and organisation of any appendages involved in locomotion, such as cilia. Here we integrate high-resolution single-cell experiments, biophysical modelling, and computational approaches to understand the consequences of distinct motility strategies. In an evolutionary context, we explore how small organisms exploit bioelectrical signalling for behavioural programming.
